In previous decades, many commercial buildings were erected with a basement or internal plant room and the air conditioning system built up around water cooled chillers installed within them. These were supplied with condenser cooling water from a roof mounted evaporative cooling tower.
Many of those coming to the end of their life cycle are presenting problems in terms of replacing them, simply because of the difficulties of not so much getting the old one out, this can be dismantled, but getting a new one in.
To get a standard replacement chiller through the building, it might be possible to disassemble it and reassemble once in place, but there would be substantial costs involved and other legislative implications.
