American-owned Plastek is one of the sector’s leading international designers and manufacturers of consumer, personal care, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics packaging. As part of a major globalisation programme, the company has developed its purpose-built
In keeping with this philosophy, Plastek specified Coolmation to supply and engineer the modern, high quality cooling system for the plant. Following a detailed site survey and close customer consultation, Coolmation recommended a solution centred on high quality water-cooled chillers and cooling towers, designed to minimise plant water consumption and waste.

Andy Tibbs, General Manager at Plastek stated: “The Coolmation system will ensure that each injection-moulding machine operates at its optimum level to maintain product quality, minimise machinery breakdowns and maximise plant profitability. Sized to meet current demand from 40 injection moulders, Coolmation’s system also provides cooling for the factory’s air conditioning system and will be able to meet future expansion requirements on the site with minimum disruption to production.”

The four Blue Box Omega chillers at the plant, operating on a three run and one standby basis, supply water at a temperature of 5oC to meet the combined mould tool cooling and air conditioning load, approaching 3mW. Water is fed at a high flow rate and pressure across each tool to provide optimum heat transfer and thus ensure peak machine productivity and output quality.
The two open circuit towers have been installed to cool the hydraulic motors on each moulding machine in addition to handling the heat rejected from the water cooled chillers – a total of some 6mW. A centralised control system at the plant ensures that all chillers can be controlled as one with compressors running harmoniously to precisely match the demands of the load. Coolmation has also supplied and installed all process and circulation pumps for the site together with water filtration and treatment equipment, control panel, weir tank, all system pipework and field cabling and wiring. All pumps are PLC controlled to rotate duty and standby operation automatically.
Blue Box Omega chillers from Coolmation are modular in design, allowing additional units to be added quickly and easily to meet expanded cooling requirements on the site. Units are built to deliver impressive energy efficient performance, providing excellent thermal exchange and low noise characteristics. The chillers are also very compact in relation to their individual output size of 743kW, ensuring that units take up the minimum amount of floor space in the Plastek plant room.
