Coolmation has supplied two 1150kW project specific air cooled water chillers for a building located in the heart of the City of London. The 16,536 m2 new office development, comprises eleven floors, plus a basement and has an outstanding location overlooking one of Londons most famous landmarks.

A prestigious, high specification building, it is a stunning new headquarters, providing a gateway between the City and the West End market with striking granite features and aesthetics which were key to the development and affected the specification of the building services.

The architect was keen to ensure the chillers and associated services did not distract from the striking building façade. “With the chillers located in a recessed roof space it was essential that the height of the chillers did not exceed 2050mm to ensure they were not visible above the roofline. Standard chillers to fit the space were not available through our usual suppliers, but Coolmation was  able to provide the solution through its Italian supplier Rhoss, who as well as having standard chiller production, can offer its design and manufacturing facilities for special projects.”

Coolmation’s solution was to supply two Rhoss 1150kW project specific R134a air cooled chillers, with a total of six screw compressors, which precisely met the height specification. In addition, each chiller was fitted with primary and secondary pump modules to speed up the installation process. Being considerably more compact, the internal layout of the chillers was carefully designed using a 3D imaging process to ensure good all round access for ongoing service and maintenance. Each chiller was 13.5m long, 2.050m high, 2.26m wide.

Apart from aesthetics, energy efficiency and sound levels were key to the specification of chillers for the project. Both the consultant and contractor accompanied Coolmations own engineers to the Rhoss factory in Italy where a full performance and accoustic test was conducted on the chillers prior to delivery and installation.

The client commented, “To fulfil the high specification services chosen for this project, it was important to verify that the Rhoss chillers were able to meet the energy efficiency levels stated and the specified noise level of 72dba in open free field conditions. Prior to delivery to the UK, we attended Rhoss’ Eurovent certified test facility in Italy to witness test the chillers’ being operated at the specified parameters, under full load conditions, and were delighted with the results.”

Designed by Rhoss to deliver some of the best EER and ESEER performances available, the air cooled screw compressor chillers benefit from the development of new energy efficient heat exchange and microprocessor control technology, brought about by Rhoss’ partnership with the University of Udine.
