British Pepper & Spice may be one of the oldest food manufacturers in Britain but an ongoing commitment to improving process technology has seen the company team up with cooling specialist Coolmation to ensure their reputation for quality remains second to none. A new process-specific, cooling solution designed, supplied and installed by Coolmation is now taking the heat out of the daily grind at the company’s Northamptonshire-based headquarters.
Established in 1666, British Pepper & Spice is the UK’s largest manufacturer and supplier of retailer branded herbs and spices, with production taking place at one of the most modern and efficient processing plants in the country. Investment in a Coolmation system to replace existing chillers has met the company’s requirement for an energy-efficient and reliable cooling system, capable of delivering chilled air into grinding chambers used in the production of the home-brand Millstone herb and spices range.
“The ability to maintain a consistently cool milling process is an essential part of production,” explains Ashni Mahay, Engineering Manager, British Pepper & Spice. “It ensures that the food ingredients retain the essential oils which help give them their distinctive aroma and taste. Knowing of Coolmation’s experience and reputation, we approached them with our requirements and they’ve certainly delivered.”
Coolmation has supplied two, high efficiency, 250kW air-cooled TCAP Rhoss chillers for the British Pepper & Spice site. Located on the roof of the milling tower, these units deliver a constant supply of chilled water at 7°C to a heat exchanger at the point of air intake, enabling a constant stream of cold air to be blown into the chambers. Designed to run on the ozone benign refrigerant R407C, Coolmation’s TCAP range features eight chillers, ranging from 250kW to 775kW, with one or two semi-hermetic compressors matched to single or dual circuit shell and tube evaporators for optimum energy efficiency. Coolmation carried out the supply and installation of all pipework, associated equipment and control components for the project which was completed in September 2003.
“British Pepper & Spice is a market leading brand, renowned for its high quality products” says Ashni Mahay. “This investment in Coolmation is integral to maintaining the same high standards and ensuring the company’s continued success. At the same time, we will reduce our energy costs with better, more efficient cooling.”
